October 12, 2023, at the request of the Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in agreement with the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan at the S.U.Umarov Physical–Technical Institute of the NAST hosted a presentation of the research processes and achievements of the institute for students of grades 10 and 11 of the Dushanbe International School.
This event was implemented as part of the announcement of 2020-2040 as the “Twenty years of the study and development of natural, exact and mathematical sciences in the field of science and education”, with the aim of stimulating technical thinking and expanding the scientific horizons of the younger generation, including in the field of physics and technology. The topic of the presentation was an introduction to the research of the International Center for Nuclear Physics Research of the institute, including the Argus-FTI nuclear research reactor, which is considered one of the unique devices in this field.
Let us recall that the creation of a nuclear analytical center based on a powerful radiation source – the Argus-PTI reactor – is due to the provision of a large volume of analytical research necessary for various branches of science and the national economy of the country. The Argus-FTI reactor was installed at the institute in the late 80s of the 20th century. The reactor makes it possible to obtain relatively high neutron flux densities (up to 7×1011 cm2s-1), which makes it very promising for the purposes of activation analysis, production of short-lived isotopes, etc. At the same time, the Argus-FTI reactor is a simple, reliable installation and, with low power, provides guaranteed safety, convenient operating conditions and low cost.
