The Theoretical Physics Sector of the S.U. Umarov Physical-Technical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tajikistan was established in 1967. The main research areas of the Sector include the development of the molecular-kinetic theory of condensed systems, the study of irreversible processes in condensed media, phase transitions and critical phenomena, as well as the application of field-theoretical methods to investigate quantum systems.

In recent years, the Sector has been actively advancing research in density functional theory (DFT) as a key tool for quantum-mechanical modeling of materials and condensed matter properties (electronic structure, energetics, defects, surfaces, mechanical and optical characteristics). In addition, the Sector is strengthening activities related to machine learning and data-driven methods in physics: building “structure–property” models, accelerating computational experiments, uncovering hidden patterns in high-dimensional data, predicting parameters and regimes of physical processes, and supporting optimization tasks and inverse materials design.
