On October 23, the 5th Forum of Scientists from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) was held at the National Library of Tajikistan under the aegis of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan. The event was attended by more than 70 specialists and heads of research centers and educational institutions from CIS countries. The main goal of the Forum was to discuss ways to advance fundamental sciences, enhance scientific and technical cooperation, and increase the role of science in the economies of CIS countries.
As part of the Forum, the 12th meeting of the Council for Cooperation in the Field of Fundamental Sciences of the CIS countries took place, where key issues concerning the development of fundamental sciences were discussed. Notably, it was the initiative of this council in 2017 to establish basic organizations within the CIS in the fields of physics and technology. In this regard, the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan proposed granting the S.U. Umarov Physical-Technical Institute the status of a basic organization of the CIS. By decision of the CIS Council of Foreign Ministers on December 10, 2020, the institute was granted the status of the “Basic Organization of the CIS Member States for the Training of Scientific Specialists in Physics and Technology.”
The main areas of activity of the institute as a basic organization include:
- training and professional development of specialists from scientific and technical structures of CIS countries;
- conducting joint scientific research with institutions from CIS countries;
- developing and coordinating regulatory acts;
- organizing international scientific and practical conferences, seminars, and symposia;
- preparing scientific, methodological, and analytical materials.
At the conclusion of the Forum, within the framework of this cooperation and based on a memorandum of understanding between the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan and the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, a cooperation agreement was signed between the S.U. Umarov Physical-Technical Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan, represented by Afzalshoh Qakhromon Zarifzoda, and the Physical-Technical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, represented by Husniddin Kasimovich Olimov. The agreement provides for joint research and the exchange of information in areas such as renewable energy sources, theoretical physics, semiconductor physics, materials science, atomic and nuclear physics. These studies will foster the development of joint projects and knowledge exchange.
There are also plans for cooperation in training specialists, implementing joint research projects, conducting seminars, internships for scientific personnel, and publishing scientific articles with practical applications of their results.
